Thomas Junghans

Thomas Junghans

Netherlands

Figure, in the work of Thomas Junghans, is reduced to its most essential presence.

Born in 1956 in Germany, he began with painting and drawing before turning to sculpture — a shift that brought his work into direct relation with material. Wood, bronze, and occasionally stone become the ground through which form is shaped and condensed.

His practice revolves around two recurring bodies of work: the Portraits and the Suites. These ensembles of abstracted figures carry a quiet, almost anonymous humanity. Forms stand, gather, or align, creating subtle relationships between proximity, distance, and rhythm.

Marked by restraint, his language avoids excess. Gesture remains minimal, yet charged — allowing emotion to emerge through structure rather than expression.

In this balance between precision and intuition, his sculptures hold a silent intensity. They do not narrate, but remain present — as if suspended between stillness and inner movement.
