Natural Material Studio

Natural Material Studio

Denmark

Natural Material Studio begins one step before the object itself — with the question of what a material can be.

Founded in Copenhagen in 2019 by Bonnie Hvillum, the design and research studio develops bespoke biomaterials from natural and discarded resources, using them to create objects, spatial installations and environments. Material research, artistic experimentation and circular thinking are approached as parts of the same process, allowing the properties of newly developed materials to influence both form and function.

The studio’s biomaterials are conceived to be biodegradable, re-castable and circular. Rather than treating sustainability as an additional layer applied to design, Natural Material Studio embeds it within the material itself and within the processes through which objects and spaces are made.

Working across design, architecture, art and material science, its multidisciplinary team explores how alternative material systems can shape future ways of living and making. Collaborations with designers, architects, researchers, cultural institutions and industry allow these experiments to move between speculative research and tangible applications.

Through this approach, Natural Material Studio proposes material innovation not simply as a technical pursuit, but as a means of reconsidering our relationship with resources, production and the environments we inhabit.
