Painting, for Mirthe Blussé, begins as a physical state before becoming an image.
Working directly on raw canvas with gouache, she approaches the surface through movement, rhythm, and immediacy. Painted horizontally on the floor, her works emerge through gestures that resemble choreography as much as composition — fluid, instinctive, and responsive.
Color leads the process. Forms appear gradually, unfolding through layers that remain open rather than fixed. Nothing is entirely predetermined; the painting evolves through presence and reaction.
Her works function as emotional landscapes — not representations of specific places, but traces of sensations, memories, and passing states. Moments seem suspended within the surface, allowing the viewer to enter a quieter space of reflection.
Trained at The Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the University of Amsterdam, Mirthe Blussé develops a practice where intuition and material remain in constant dialogue.
