For Laura Kjær, a piece of furniture can hold more than function. It can carry traces of time, knowledge and the history of making.
Working across furniture and collectible design, Kjær explores how craftsmanship, materiality and surface can give an object a sensory presence in the contemporary interior. Colour, texture and material are not applied as finishing elements, but treated as active parts of the work — capable of shaping how an object is perceived, touched and experienced.
Her practice looks closely at historical craft traditions and the knowledge embedded within them. Rather than reproducing traditional techniques, Kjær considers how they can be reactivated through contemporary processes and given new relevance. This dialogue between inherited methods and present-day making allows familiar furniture typologies to become sites for material and narrative experimentation.
Kjær holds a BA in Interior and Furniture Design from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) in Norway and an MA in Product Design from Konstfack in Sweden. Her work has been presented at Stockholm Furniture Fair and through the travelling Ung Svensk Form exhibition, as well as in a solo exhibition at Kvadrat’s Stockholm showroom. She has received several grants and honours, including support from the Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond).
