With a background in surveying, David first approached the landscape through measurement before turning to a more tactile understanding of the earth through clay.
His path led him from South Africa to Scotland, and eventually to La Borne — a place deeply rooted in ceramic tradition. There, surrounded by raw materials and a community shaped by making, he established the foundations of his practice.
Initially focused on utilitarian ware, he developed a body of work centered around the vessel, often ovoid in form and explored through variations in scale and proportion. Over time, his language shifted: from 2004 onwards, sharper geometries began to emerge, introducing a more structured, almost architectural presence.
Covered in slip, his surfaces catch the light along their edges, revealing a subtle tension between organic form and constructed line.
